Dartmouth’s newest residence, Shonda Rhimes Hall, marks the first time a campus building has been named for a Black person or a woman.
Dartmouth alum Shonda Rhimes is breaking barriers once more—this time on campus.
The acclaimed producer behind Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton has pledged $15 million to Dartmouth College, funding a new residence hall that will bear her name. When it opens in fall 2028, Shonda Rhimes Hall will become the first building at the Ivy League institution named after a woman or a Black person.
The residence hall, which will house 115 juniors and seniors, is part of President Sian Leah Beilock’s $500 million plan to ease Dartmouth’s housing shortage. Over the next nine years, the initiative will add 1,000 new beds for students, faculty, and staff. According to Dartmouth News, Rhimes Hall is designed to enhance campus life and strengthen community ties.
For Rhimes, the investment is both personal and symbolic.
“At a time when it feels like people are questioning the value of higher education, it feels important to put my money back into higher education,” she told the outlet, adding that she hopes her gift inspires students to pursue ambitious goals beyond college.
Rhimes has kept close ties with Dartmouth throughout her career. She famously made Meredith Grey, the central character of Grey’s Anatomy, a Dartmouth alumna—complete with campus apparel featured onscreen. She has also served as a trustee, delivered the 2014 commencement address, and often returned to connect with students.
The university has leaned into the power of representation as well. Earlier this month, SheaMoisture announced an expanded partnership with Dartmouth’s business school to support women entrepreneurs.
Rhimes will return to campus on Oct. 18 for a fireside chat with fellow alum and entertainment powerhouse Mindy Kaling.
Wishing you prosperity and abundance congratulations God Bless You!!
