Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa Turns Postgame Spotlight Toward Jesus After Win.
The game had barely ended when Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa used his first words on national television to give credit to his faith.
After leading the Dolphins to a 27-21 win over the New York Jets on Monday night—Miami’s first victory of the season—the fifth-year quarterback made it clear where he placed the spotlight. Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, but in his postgame interview with ESPN, he quickly pointed to Jesus and offered prayers for injured teammate Tyreek Hill.
“First and foremost, all glory belongs to God, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I just want to thank Him for this victory, for keeping us safe for the most part,” Tagovailoa said. “My prayers go out to all the guys that got injured tonight—especially my boy Tyreek.
“It was a team win. That’s all it was,” he added. “Hard-fought to the end. I just wanted to make sure that I glorified my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
The victory was tempered by the loss of Hill, who was carted off in the third quarter with what ESPN later confirmed as a season-ending knee injury. Cameras caught Tagovailoa checking on his star receiver, who remained upbeat despite the setback.
“He was kind of joking,” Tagovailoa said. “That’s just his personality.”
Tagovailoa has long been one of the NFL’s most outspoken Christian athletes, though his professional career has yet to match the dominance he displayed at Alabama. In five seasons with Miami, he has reached the playoffs only once despite four winning campaigns. Individually, his numbers shine—leading the league in passer rating (2022), passing yards (2023), and completion percentage (2024). Yet his journey has been marred by injuries, including multiple concussions, broken ribs, a hip issue, and a high-ankle sprain.
Still, his faith remains central. In 2023, while navigating concussion protocols, he said Scripture was his anchor. He and his wife make a daily habit of reading the Bible together.
“It really helps strengthen our relationship—not only with each other, but with our Heavenly Father,” he explained. “One of our favorite Scriptures is 1 Corinthians 2:9: ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.’ We always hold dear to that verse, and it continually reminds us of His plan.”
